The Hammond Civic Center is a 4,500 seat arena that opened in 1938. It is still alive and well as of this writing in spring of 2009, although it has been quite some time since they've hosted a rock show. I've always loved the Civic Center. So much closer than Chicago, they frequently had the same major acts perform. One could sometimes see a favorite artist one night in Chicago and the next in Hammond. Memorable shows that I saw in the 70s & 80s include: Foghat, Blue Oyster Cult, UFO, Cheap Trick, and Rush. The Civie was always a wild and rowdy place. The upstairs mens room not only offered needed relief, but various mood enhancing substances were sold there in. We frequently solved disputes over seating with fists and if you weren't quick about it, cops would drag you into an elevator for a little attitude adjustment. Never happened to me, but I saw it. I guess it's no surprise they don't have rock shows there any longer. If anybody has any more information or corrections, feel free to let us know at: contributions@regionrockmemories.com |
